A Law to Redefine Corruption — A Need of the Time
In today’s world, when we hear the word “corruption,” most people immediately think of bribery or financial transactions. But the real question is — is corruption limited only to monetary exchange?
In reality, the current system for identifying corruption in our country is largely dependent on proving financial transactions. That means a person is considered corrupt only if bribery can be proven. However, establishing such proof is often extremely difficult. As a result, corruption continues to exist openly without action being taken against it.
If we analyze the word “corruption” linguistically, it essentially means “corrupt conduct” — any behavior that is unethical, unjust, or illegal. Therefore, any wrongful or unlawful act committed by a public representative, officer, or authority should also be considered corruption.
Ground Reality in Administration
Across various administrative sectors, such issues are commonly observed. For example: issuing incorrect certificates, deliberately delaying action, conducting incomplete procedures, or delivering unlawful decisions. These actions directly affect the rights of ordinary citizens.
However, since there is often no direct evidence of financial exchange, such acts are not officially categorized as corruption. As a result, even visible wrongdoing goes unpunished.
Accountability in the Justice System
Similarly, in the judicial system, there are instances where decisions may not align with legal principles. If a decision clearly falls outside the framework of law, there should be mechanisms to establish accountability.
This is not about questioning the integrity of the judiciary, but about strengthening responsibility and transparency within the system.
Why Legal Reform is Necessary
Therefore, it is the need of the hour to broaden the definition of corruption. It should not be limited to financial transactions alone. Any act involving misuse of power, unlawful conduct, or injustice should also be recognized as corruption.
- It will make corruption easier to identify and prove
- It will improve accountability in governance
- It will help control wrongful practices
- It will strengthen public trust in the system
The fight against corruption cannot be won by action alone, but by defining it clearly and effectively.
