Whenever a major scam or public controversy emerges, demands are often raised for the resignation of the concerned minister. Recently, allegations of irregularities and paper leaks in the NEET examination process triggered similar demands for the resignation of the Union Education Minister. This raises an important question: Is the resignation of a minister a permanent solution to such problems, or is it merely a symbol of moral accountability?

Why Are Resignations Demanded?

In a democratic system, ministers are the political heads of their respective ministries. When serious irregularities or controversies arise during their tenure, the public often expects them to accept moral responsibility. Consequently, demands for resignation are frequently made even before investigations are completed.

Arguments Supporting the Demand for Resignation

• It establishes moral accountability.
• It helps maintain public confidence.
• It may facilitate an impartial investigation.
• It sends a strong message of responsibility throughout the administration.

Is Resignation the Ultimate Solution?

The answer cannot simply be "Yes" or "No." If the root cause lies in examination procedures, administrative failures, technological weaknesses, or systemic corruption, merely replacing the minister will not automatically eliminate these problems.

Even after a new minister assumes office, similar incidents may continue if the existing system remains unchanged. Therefore, institutional reforms are just as important as changes in political leadership.

What Is the Real Solution?

• Use of advanced technology to ensure question paper security.
• Swift and strict action against those responsible.
• Independent and impartial investigations.
• Comprehensive reforms to restore students' confidence.

Resignation or Reform?

A minister's resignation may, in certain circumstances, serve as an important symbol of moral accountability. However, if no structural reforms follow, its long-term impact remains limited.

On the other hand, even if reforms are introduced, public concerns may persist unless accountability is clearly established. Therefore, both accountability and systemic reforms are equally essential.

Revolutionary Reforms in Education and Examination System: The Need of the Hour

In my opinion, the existing education and examination system requires fundamental transformation. Assessment based primarily on theoretical knowledge, memorization, and written examinations cannot fully reflect a student's true abilities. Instead, an education system centered on competencies, practical learning, and experiential education should be developed, enabling students to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and practical skills through real-world work.

Every project, experiment, or practical activity completed by a student should be digitally recorded with timestamps, transparent evaluation criteria, and permanently archived. These records should be accessible for review by students, parents, experts, media, and, where appropriate, the general public. Such transparency would ensure that every awarded grade is supported by verifiable evidence, significantly reducing opportunities for arbitrariness, bias, or concealment.

The primary objective of education should no longer be examination scores or certificates alone, but the practical application of knowledge, innovation, skill development, and meaningful contribution to society. A student's demonstrated competence through actual work should become the true measure of learning and the most credible certification of achievement.

In my opinion, such a transparent, competency-based, technology-enabled education and examination system represents the future direction of India's education system. I also believe that many of these principles are reflected, to a considerable extent, in the educational approach developed by educationist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk.

Conclusion

The resignation of a minister may be appropriate and necessary in certain situations. However, it cannot be regarded as the sole solution to systemic problems. Real change will occur only when those responsible are held accountable, examination systems become more secure, transparent, and innovative, and students' trust in the education system is fully restored.
